A Brief History of Moore County Moore County is located in the southern portion of Middle Tennessee. After the Civil War, residents of the more remote parts of Bedford, Franklin and Lincoln counties petitioned the State Legislature for the creation of a new county. On December 14, 1870, Moore County was formed. To support their demand for a new county, the rural petitioners pointed to their distance from the county seats and also described the treacherous road system that made travel difficult and very often impossible. Lynchburg was named as the county seat. The rolling hills and plentiful springs attracted pioneers from many states, especially from North Carolina. With a total area of only 129 square miles, Moore County is the second smallest county in the state. The Elk River, Mulberry Creek, and their tributaries create a series of fertile, heavily timbered ridges, many of which have been cleared for pastures. In addition, these ridges are separated by fertile bottomland that is nearly perfect for hay production. This combination of hills for grazing and creek bottom land for growing hay contributes to an agricultural combination that is especially suited for raising beef cattle. The lucrative whiskey industry is an integral part of the county's heritage. Moore County is the location of the Jack Daniel Distillery, the oldest registered distillery in the USA. Jack Daniel's famous Tennessee whiskey is marketed world-wide. Despite the operational distillery, the county is dry. Back to ABOUT THE FARM |
